Which plants are toxic to pets?

Turns out, hundreds of plants can be poisonous to pets, and many of these are found in and around our homes!

In fact, experts say when it comes to pets, there are no “safe” plants. It’s heartbreaking but better to know now than later!

The following list contains 8 plants and flowers that are commonly planted in or around Thai households that are toxic to pets.


Toxic Properties for pets: 
Cannabis poisoning from plants and the leftover matter is one of the most common plants poisoning vets found, especially in dogs.

Delta nine tetrahydrocannabinol affects cat and dogs’ neurological systems.

Symptoms of poisoning in pets: 
Incoordination, tremors, drooling, seizures, possible respiratory problems, depression, coma.


Toxic Properties for pets: 
Sago Palms (Cycads) are commonly found in tropical and ornamental gardens. All parts of the plant are highly toxic to dogs. Consumption of sago palm is often fatal.

Avoid having sago palms in and around your home if you have pets, and be extremely careful when removing them.

Symptoms of poisoning in pets: 
Vomiting, diarrhea, liver damage, liver failure, multiple organ failure.


Toxic Properties for pets: 
Many popular Ivy plants, including English Ivy and Devil’s Ivy/Golden Pothos, have moderate toxicity to pets.

Symptoms of poisoning in pets: 
Mouth and stomach irritation, excessive drooling, foaming at the mouth, swelling of the mouth, tongue and lips, vomiting, diarrhea.

Toxic Properties for pets: 
These plants contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. Chewing or biting into this plant will release these crystals.

Symptoms of poisoning in pets: 
Tissue penetration and irritation of the mouth and GI tract.

Some rubber tree plants, such as Japanese, Chinese, jade, and Indian rubber plants are toxic to cats and dogs.

Decreased appetite, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, depression, skin irritation.

Although considered a medicinal plant for humans, aloe vera’s level of toxicity is mild to moderate for cats and dogs.

Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, depression, anorexia, tremors, change in urine color.

Chinese Evergreen’s level of toxicity is mild to moderate, though symptoms can include liver and kidney damage.

Oral irritation, pain and swelling of the mouth, tongue, and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing.

Toxic Properties for pets: 

The poisonous part is the white rubber, and if it comes into contact with the skin, it will itch and sore.

Symptoms of poisoning in pets: 

Poisonous if ingested by pets, the toxic principle is saponin, which has foaming properties similar to soap. Symptoms, which are usually mild to moderate, include drooling, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Other common toxic plants include, but are not limited to: holly, tulip, oleander, azalea, daffodil, carnations, chrysanthemum, corn plant, dumb cane, jade plant.
